4. What is your best selling product/toy right now?

We focus very heavily on pet nutrition and supplements. One of best selling supplements is “Love Bugs” a potent pre & probiotic powder. As more than 70% of the pet’s immune system is housed in their gastrointestinal tract making sure good bacteria are present in there makes a huge difference to their overall wellbeing. Our other top sellers are our non-toxic Omega-3 oil supplements; we always recommend avoiding Salmon oil as it tends to bioaccumulate toxins and heavy metals like mercury. Instead, we advise using small, short living fish like sardines, anchovy, mackerel, or herring to get those essential fatty acids!

5. What’s your name?

I’m Amanda Rose and I’m one of the owners of the store. The other owner is my partner of almost 6 years, Travis Sarvas.

6. Who else has been integral to the opening of the new store?

Dawson Wallace, a long time family friend of mine, has been with us almost since we’ve opened. She is an amazing asset to our store and helps us in more ways than we can list. We also have had such amazing support for our friends, family and the Leduc community in general. Without them we would not be able to do what we love!

7. Do you own any cats or dogs?

Yes, we do! We have three dogs named Brandy, Allie, & Bear. Brandy is 6, Allie is 13, and Bear is 4. All their ages are guesstimates because they are all rescues. Brandy is a Husky x who excels in agility (we are just about to start Level 2 and she loves it). Allie is a Coonhound x and may be considered a “senior” dog but that doesn’t slow her down in the slightest; she can finish a 7km walk at the dog park without breaking a sweat. Bear is a Jack Russell x and is our biggest baby. Her favourite activity is paddle-boarding in the sun (she gets to nap while I do all the work).

We also have two cats named KitKat & Bob. KitKat was rescued from a northern shelter where she was taken off “death row”. She is an absolute sweetheart and is pretty convinced that the world revolves around her. Bob, our male cat, is also a rescue. He is almost fully blind although he can see shadows, his favourite activity is pouncing on said shadows whenever he can find them. We also foster for several local rescues, so we tend to have extra “house guests” on any given day. Our animals bring so much joy into our lives and are a huge reason that we got involved in the pet retail world in the first place.

8. What has inspired your interest in owning a Bone & Biscuit Pet Supply Store?

I actually grew up in a raw feeding household. My mom read Ian Billinghurst’s books when I was about 7 and so raw food and nutrition is something I grew up with. I’ve known my whole life that I wanted to have a career surrounding my pets – I can’t imagine going to work and not being able to bring my dogs with me! Bone & Biscuit was a natural fit for me because I am extremely picky about everything my pets come into contact with and their high standards aligned well with mine.

9. Your pets hit the jackpot now that you run a specialty pet supply store! What kind of toy/treat do they currently love?

A common love for all 5 of them is food. They are all raw fed and love the variety of proteins I can now provide them with. We often joke that our pets eat better than we do! As we get more and more into agility with Brandy, we are always testing out new treat options to keep her interested and motivated, so I think she really enjoys that. One of Bear’s great passions in life is napping, and so she loves demoing beds for customers in the store, as soon as we pull a bed off the shelf she is there trying to climb in to show off her napping skills.

10. Where is the nearest dog park?

The nearest dog park is the Leduc Off-Leash Dog Park located beside the Leduc Recreation Center. It is 40 acres and is fully fenced. It also happens to be sponsored by your truly. We have waste bag dispensers situated around the park (and around the city of Leduc) which are filled by some awesome volunteers! ?

11. What is the best advice you could give to new pet owners?

You are your pet’s health advocate in this world. Educate yourself as much as possible on every decision you make for your pets, especially their food. As Ann Wigmore said, “the food you eat can either be the safest and most powerful form of medicine or the slowest form of poison”.

Thanks, Amanda!
