Store Manager Spotlight: Bone & Biscuit in Edmonton, Alberta

This week we introduce one of our Edmonton pet store locations to learn about their experience and local insight! Read on to learn about the store manager Jessica, as she shares her story.

1. When did this location open?

We opened April 4, 2017. We have officially been open just over a year!

2. Where are you located?

We are located in Edmonton, Alberta at 4424-17 street, in the Choice Meadows shopping area, directly across from the Real Canadian Superstore.

3. What are the best ways for customers to contact the store for questions and stay up to date?

Phone: 780-465-1450

4. What is your best selling product/toy right now?

Currently our best selling item is Paw-Fu (Bugs Be Gone)! It is an all-natural bug repellent. Dogs don’t need chemicals, and we are very passionate about finding safe and harmless products for our furry friends.

5. What’s your name?

I’m Jessica and I’m one of the managers of the store.

6. Who else has been integral to the opening of the new store?

This store would not be possible without the owners, Kim and Darren (my parents), and the second store manager Ashley (my oldest sister). We are family owned/operated. We have picked up some great staff along the way who continue to be huge assets to our team. Having a passion for pet health is a priority for us and we are lucky to have found staff with the same views.

7. Do you own any cats or dogs?

I myself own a rescue dog named Asher. He is about 3 years old now and is a Pit Bull/Rottweiler mix. He has a very calm personality. The owners (Kim and Darren) have 2 very wild, energetic Portuguese Water Dogs named Max and Molly.

8. What has inspired your interest in owning a Bone & Biscuit location?

I don’t remember a time we didn’t have a four-legged friend around. My entire life has been surrounded by dogs. We didn’t really know much about pet nutrition until the store opened, but Kim and Darren have been raw feeding their pets for well over ten years now. My family owns numerous businesses and we all have dogs so owning a Bone & Biscuit store seemed like a great fit. We have a love for pets, but now we have an even bigger passion for pets and their health.

9. The store owners’ dogs (Max and Molly) really got lucky as regulars at the Bone & Biscuit! What kind of toy/treat do they currently love?

Those two have a major love for food , and will literally eat anything. They are raw fed so their diets do consist of a variety of meats, raw bones and treats. It’s hard to narrow down their favourite. The great thing about having the store is having Max and Molly test new products! They are not picky or particular about food/toys. It’s great to be able to give our customers feedback on products we bring in.

10. Where is the nearest dog park?

The closest dog park to our store is the off-leash at Jackie Parker Park. ?

11. What is the best advice you could give to new pet owners?

Knowledge is power. The more you learn the better you will do for your furry companion. You as a pet parent are responsible to better the health of your pet. You must be their advocate. In the words of Rodney Habib, “an educated, informed and well researched community of pet owners can only put pressure on the pet food industry to be better! When pet owners know better, they will only DO BETTER.”

Thanks, Jessica!
