1. When do you open?
Bone & Biscuit Westwind opened on June 12.
2. Where are you located?
We are located in Westwind Centre (515-11 Westwind Dr) right of Highway 16 and Century Road.

4. What’s your name?
My name is Alyssa Johnston and most days you will find me with my little pup Maddy.
5. Who else has been integral to the opening of the new store?
Both of my parents Carey and Donna Johnston have been here every step of the way. Carey is a Superintendent for PCL construction, he is one of the hardest working people I know. My mom owns her own business, which in part inspired me to be a business owner as well.
I have a very big family, many of whom are entrepreneurs. The entrepreneurial mindset was instilled in us from my grandparents who coincidentally opened the doors to their business the same day we did June 12 in 1979.
6. What inspired you to own a Bone & Biscuit location?
6 years ago my dog Maddy unexpectedly came into my life, she became such a huge part of my life and ultimately inspired the idea of opening a pet supply store. I knew I wanted to make a professional change and I always wanted to be a business owner. After doing some research on other pet supply stores, we knew The Bone and Biscuit was the best fit for us. Their high brand standards and passion for pet care were aligned with our values.
7. Do you own any cats or dogs?
I grew up with pets. We had a Golden lab named Sheba, a husky shepherd lab named Murphy and a calico cat named Kali. I now have a miniature shih tzu named Maddy.
8. Maddy hit the jackpot now that you run a specialty pet supply store! What’s her favourite treat or toy from Bone & Biscuit?
My Maddy loves anything with duck!
9. How do you stay involved in the local pet community?
Spruce Grove is such a great community, we are a donation drop off centre for Second Chance Animal Rescue Society (SCARS) and we have plans to branch out more into local sponsorship opportunities and community initiatives.
10. What’s your favourite product from Bone & Biscuit and why?
What I love about the Bone and Biscuit is everything you pick up in the store you know is of the highest quality. You don’t have to worry if a product is good enough for your pet because of The Bone and Biscuit’s high brand standards, they have researched that product before it makes it into their stores.
11. Where is the nearest dog park?
Spruce Grove has a great dog park, The Cpl. Jim Galloway Memorial Off-Leash dog park. This park has several features such as:
- A designated area for small dogs
- Double-gated entry to unleash and leash dogs
- More than 8.6 acres of fenced off-leash park area
- 900 metres of gravel walking trails
- Several comfortable seating areas

12. What is the best advice you could give to new pet owners?
For new pet owners, it’s so important to start off on the right nutrition plan, it can save your pet from medical issues later on.
Understand your pets’ breed before you get them, make sure their temperament, size and activity level fits into your lifestyle. Once you have decided on a breed, visit a pet store before you get your new dog to get a good idea of the cost associated with feeding them the food they need.
And love them as unconditionally as they love you.
